Agalloch - Ashes Against The GrainBlack/Doom/Folk Metal
August 8th, 2006
"Ashes Against The Grain" is the third full length from Portland's Agalloch. The sound of the album encompasses a broad range of influences from black metal to folk music. It is impossible to provide a perfect description of this album, but it is very close to a mixture of old Katatonia and Wolves In The Throne Room. Guitarists Don Anderson and John Haughm masterfully weave melodies which evoke a sense of melancholy, nostalgia and longing, propelling the songs to lengths of up to ten minutes without ever appearing to be long for the sake of being long. Highly recommended for people who enjoy emotive music that isn't corny or unnecessarily dramatic.
